A History of WOLVERINE
The history of WOLVERINE begins with a company called OYOAHA, which was founded in France in 1998 by Philippe Blanc: an academically trained fine artist who—through exploring the collision of computer technology and culture— became fascinated with the potential of software development.
OYOAHA’s early projects consisted of collaborations between artist and engineer, with results that showed up in places like the Guggenheim Museum and pop culture movie references.
1998
OYOAHA is founded by Philippe Blanc in France as a Software Engineering Firm (Java, C++, Lingo) primarily developing cross-platform desktop applications.
1998-2000
"Webbot Al" Artificial Intelligence Agent (vs1-3.0, Java, AWT, Swing): A multi-platform desktop application developed with Java, AWT, and Swing, later including a 3D environment. The project is shown at the Guggenheim Museum and receives international recognition.
1999-2001
"Look and Feel" Java look and feel library (vs1-3.0, Java, Swing): In Partnership with Borland Software Corporation, develops a Java look and feel library eventually released as an open source project, which is still in use by Java developers.
2002
OYOAHA heads West and relocates to Portland, Oregon.
2001-2005
"Softlime" 3D Web Plugin (Java): 3D rendering engine Java Applet eventually released as an open source project. Develops a multi-platform Vector Graphics desktop application. (Java, Swing)
Around this time, OYOAHA became solely dedicated to website design and Internet application development—doing all the things a web development company is supposed to do, like develop propriety CMS and e-commerce solutions and build lots of custom software for its clients. It also expanded its team and brought on David Price as a Managing Partner.
During this transition, other things were happening on the Internet and OYOAHA was paying attention. The Internet had developed into something people experienced but couldn't explain—and our clients were filled with panic and frustration.
Whether by accident or intention, there was an increasing demand to not only create technology solutions but to also explain what the technology solutions meant. Problem Solving was no longer step one. Helping clients understand the problem to solve was the new frontrunner.
WOLVERINE: the evolution of OYOAHA.
In order to put Understanding before Problem Solving, a new identity—with a more simple, focused mission—developed. In lieu of designers and developers, our staff consists of Design Consultants who provide clients with our critical thinking framework and all the strategy, direction, understanding and meaning it produces.
